![]() Artist's Statement: I am a fiber artist who uses layering of textiles and embellishments to convey impressions of nature. All my life I have enjoyed nature and being out in the world of trees, water and wild life. As I create my own art, I am drawn to these enduring passions. My subject matter often evokes a fond memory of my youth and one that has broader implications. I use the repetitions and patterns in nature as metaphor for life’s cycles. My recent work - featuring patterns of tree leaves and late summer seeds - is a metaphor for the riches discovered in life’s maturity. My art gives me the opportunity to explore specific moments in time when nature shows her finest – a spring blossom, fall colors, sunlight moving across the snow, morning frost on fall leaves, or Sandhill cranes dancing in the morning mist. My best work is when I dig into a subject and go to the very essence of what I know about it. The traditional quilting medium is my springboard for artistic expression. While quilting as a woman’s art form is often unrecognized as art, I embrace this form and want to help others recognize the artistic element that has been part of the quilting tradition. I work in this medium because fabric and thread resonate with my soul. I work with fabric because I love it. I love the look of it, the feel of it and all its varieties. For me, I delight in finding a wonderful fabric that speaks to me, and then find a way to combine it with other wonderful fabrics for a whole new creation. My favorite art form is sculpture, and quilting provides a variation of low relief sculpture. My work brings together a number of different threads of my life: my love of fabric, color and texture; my historical interests, my love of nature, and my interest in women’s art and work. I endeavor to share my ongoing passions for color, texture, fabrics and threads with the viewer. One of my greatest delights is when a new viewer approaches my work with the emotional memories of “my grandmother used to quilt” and suddenly exclaims with wonder: “This is ART!” Biography: Nancy’s art quilts have a graphic quality and at the same time, provide an experience of intimacy. Nancy’s textile art features impressions of nature through layered and embellished fabrics; her fabric choices vary from purchased hand dyed silk and cottons to synthetic velour. Her quilting often creates a variation of low relief sculpture. Her color palette varies from intense to minimal as the subject matter warrants. In addition to creating one of a kind textile art, Nancy lectures, teaches workshops and does commission work. She has been working in this medium since 1994, retiring from working in industrial /organizational psychology to work full time in art in 2001. Her work is in numerous private and public collections throughout the USA. Nancy was awarded a solo show from January to April 2007 at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, WI, based on her work in the 2006 Art and Soul of Quilting exhibition. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and she has won numerous awards. And All That Jazz was exhibited at Hoeri, Lake Konstanz, Germany in 2005. Summer Confection was in a special exhibit in The Hague, the Netherlands in 2004. A solo show, Rhythms of Nature, was held in 2003.
